BrahMos advanced sea-to-sea variant test fired successfully

The freshly commissioned stealth guided-missile destroyer INS Visakhapatnam successfully test-fired an extended range sea-to-sea variant of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile on Tuesday.

"From INS Visakhapatnam, an advanced sea-to-sea variant of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was tested today. According to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the missile "hit the designated target ship accurately."

The successful test-firing proves the precision of the ship's combat system and armament complex, as well as a new capability provided by the missile to the Navy and the nation, according to the Navy. "This bodes well for Aatma Nirbhar Bharat and gives the Navy another shot in the arm," the statement continued.

Mission readiness

Congratulating scientists on the successful test-firing, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on social media, “The robustness of Indian Navy mission readiness is reconfirmed today after the successful launch of the advanced version of BrahMos Missile from INS Vishakhapatnam today.”

BrahMos is a collaborative project between India and Russia that can be launched from land, sea, subsea, and air against the surface and sea-based targets. Its range is initially capped at 290 kilometres.

As part of the Missile Technology Control Regime's responsibilities, the missile's range was initially limited to 290 kilometres (MTCR). Following India's admission to the club in June 2016, officials stated that the range would be increased to 450 km and then to 600 km. A long-range missile had previously been tested.

INS Visakhapatnam, with a displacement of 7,400 tonnes, is the first of four ingeniously designed and built Project-15B class stealth guided-missile destroyers and was commissioned in November 2021.
