Air Force successfully fires extended range air-launched Brahmos missile

The Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully test-fired an extended-range (ER) variant of the air-launched BrahMos missile on Wednesday, October 18, 2023. The missile was fired from a Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jet and successfully struck a target over 1,500 kilometers away with precision.

The extended-range BrahMos missile has a maximum range of 400 to 500 kilometers and can strike land and sea targets at supersonic speed. It is a joint venture between India and Russia and is considered to be one of the most advanced cruise missiles in the world.

The successful test-firing of the extended-range BrahMos missile is a significant milestone for the IAF. It gives the IAF the ability to strike high-value targets deep inside enemy territory from a safe distance. It also gives the IAF a strategic edge in any potential conflict with its neighbors.

BrahMos

  • The BrahMos missile is named after the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers, which flow through India and Russia respectively.
  • The BrahMos missile is the fastest cruise missile in the world, with a speed of Mach 2.8.
  • The BrahMos missile can carry a variety of warheads, including conventional, high-explosive, and nuclear warheads.
  • The BrahMos missile is currently in service with the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Significance of the Test-Firing

The successful test-firing of the extended-range BrahMos missile is a significant milestone for the IAF for several reasons.

  • It gives the IAF the ability to strike high-value targets deep inside enemy territory from a safe distance. This is a major deterrent against any potential aggression.
  • It also gives the IAF a strategic edge in any potential conflict with its neighbors.
  • The test-firing also demonstrates the growing indigenous capabilities of the Indian defense industry. The BrahMos missile is jointly developed by India and Russia, but India has developed its own capabilities to produce and maintain the missile.

Overall, the successful test-firing of the extended-range BrahMos missile is a major boost for the IAF and the Indian defense industry. It is a testament to India's growing military capabilities and its commitment to deterring aggression.
